about me...
Born in Mumbai, in 1967, my obsession with art goes back to childhood. I graduated in textile designing, which I had then thought was the best medium for my artistic expressions.
While in college I developed a fascination for trekking and adventure sports. This fascination compelled me to participate in the challenging Adventure and Basic Mountaineering Courses, at Manali and Uttarkashi. But, I still felt an inner restlessness, a need to paint and design more than our Nature Lovers Club’s magazine cover. On graduation, along with Designing and exhibiting Children’s Ethnic Wear, I started learning the intricacies of Fine Art. I trained under the best of teachers, undertook an Art Teachers Diploma and also fulfilled my dream by doing a Certificate Course in painting, from our esteemed J. J. School of Art.
My first group show at the Museum Gallery, May 2005, was simply, a tribute to everything that inspired me to paint. Time spent on the mountains, developed in me, a respect for the Elements. This led to my next major show, “Connexion of Elements”, in Nehru Centre AC Gallery, in March 2007. This was a collection of abstracts, capturing the inherent beauty and qualities of the Elements. My love for animals inspired me to create a whole series of paintings on wildlife conservation titled “S. O. S." This solo show was held at the Nehru Centre Circular Gallery in May 2009. It was from this show that I started using ‘Pointillism’, the technique developed in 1886 by Georges Seurat in France, and this got me instant attention from the art world and the media. I loved the mystical, surrealistic look about this technique and thought it would work wonders with abstracts. I started working on this new collection for my solo show, ‘To the Point of Abstraction.....held at Artists’ Centre, in October, 2010.
Besides these, I have also held some solo and group shows, in other Galleries, in Mumbai. Participation in Monsoon Shows has also been an enlightening experience.
Being a mother of two lovely daughters made me realize that teaching is the best teacher. So, in April 2007, I started conducting painting workshops for children in summer vacations. The mothers wanted to join in too, after seeing the creations of their kids and so now I conduct personalized classes for them too. This is round the year, at my Studio in Santacruz West.
